Theory: AI finding bugs at scale is why 'Black October' is happening
Severity 3Status unknownreportedAI and software supply chainAI-related

The dominant explanation: since Claude Mythos (April) and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and Daybreak, models find critical bugs faster than maintainers can fix them. Monthly CVE counts reportedly rose from about 4,000 to about 15,000 since April, PHP2Shell, the Node.js Brotli bug and the KSMBD flaws were all AI-found, Jason Clinton predicts 18 months of heavy automated exploitation, and Sam Altman says the bugs can no longer all be patched. A viral claim that Claude cracked the eMudhra keys with one prompt is unverified.

What to do: Anthropic and OpenAI both say the fix is AI-assisted defense and formal verification, over roughly 18 months.

AI angle: Also the context for Joel's note on Claude Mythos Preview / Project Glasswing.

The vulnerability tsunami is coming in just a few months and there won't be enough time to patch critical infrastructure

Why this score

Backed by lab statements and the AI provenance of several October bugs; the CVE-volume figure and the one-prompt eMudhra claim come from social posts, so overall confidence is reported.
