Abandoned Popcorn Time updater left millions open to RCE; researchers pushed 2M disabling updates
Severity 5MitigatedconfirmedConsumer devices

CVE-2026-30612: whoever controlled the abandoned Popcorn Time update domain could run code as SYSTEM or root. Eye Security took the domain and pushed over 2 million updates that disable the updater. Uninstall Popcorn Time.

What to do: Grok rated 7; capped at 5 because researchers already neutralized most installs. Second Eye link came from Grok and could not be fetched (robots); the first was confirmed by search. Oct 26: 17 of 20 flagged domains now point to Shadowserver; 3 do not, so whoever holds them could still push code to remaining installs. Uninstall Popcorn Time.
