Questions

What is a buyer's premium?

A buyer's premium is a percentage an auction house adds on top of your winning bid. At an 18% premium, a $100 winning bid costs $118 before tax and any other fees. Online auctions on HiBid and Equip-Bid almost always charge one.

How do I work out what I will pay?

Add the premium to the bid, then sales tax, then any per-lot fee, then a card fee if you pay by card. With an 18% premium, 9% sales tax and a $2 lot fee, a $100 winning bid costs $130.62.

Is sales tax charged on the buyer's premium?

This calculator charges sales tax on the bid plus the premium. Check how your auction invoices it. A resale certificate on file with the auction house can remove the sales tax.

How high should I bid?

Start from what the item sells for, take off the selling fees and shipping, decide how much you want to keep, then work back through the premium, tax and fees. The max bid section below does that for you.
